Rights
Mercy Centre endorses the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and acknowledges the contribution of people with disabilities to the community and society.
· People with disability enjoy human rights, freedoms and respect like other people.
· People with a disability are equal under the Law
· Women and girls with disability are not treated unfairly because of their gender and because of their disability
· Children with disability have the same human rights and freedoms as other children
· People with disability have the right to live independently and take part in all aspects of life
· People with disability enjoy the right to life which every human being has
· People with disability have the same access to the justice system as other people
· Every person with disability has the same right as everyone else to be respected as a whole person
· People with disability have the same right as everyone else to live, take part and be included in the community
· People with disability are given the opportunity to move around and be as independent as possible
· People with disability have the right to say what they think and share their ideas like other people do
· People with disability have the same right as everyone else to be as healthy as possible, without discrimination because of their disability
· People with disability and their families have the right to an adequate standard of living, including food, clothing and housing
· People with disability can effectively and fully take part in political and public life in the same way other people can, including the right to vote, stand for elections and be voted in
· People with disability have the same right to take part in cultural life as other people do
Responsibilities
With rights come responsibilities. People with disabilities receiving Mercy Centre services have a number of responsibilities:
· People with a disability will follow Mercy Centre policies and procedures to the best of their abilities
· People with a disability will treat each other with respect and dignity
· People with a disability will treat Mercy Centre staff with respect and dignity
· People with a disability will respect the rights of others
Contributions
People with a disability contribute to the community and society in a number of ways-
· They enrich our lives by helping us to celebrate difference
· They contribute to a diverse society
· They contribute to the cultural wealth of society (Wild Choir, Dance Club, etc.)
· They assist the needy (Meals on Wheels delivery, work crew, etc.)
· They contribute to Mercy Centre management (client meetings, surveys, etc.)
· They are part of who we are
